Automation for Optimal Production Efficiency

Danfoss Power Solutions, a world-class leader in mobile hydraulics has its global headquarters in Nordborg, Denmark. 

Today Kardex supports Danfoss with automated solutions across Europe, Asia and the US, but the partnership began in Denmark in 1997. Currently over 50 Kardex machines are installed across their three locations, forming part of a buffer solution that ensures efficiency and smooth material flow between each production step.  

One of Danfoss' Nordborg production sites specialises in manufacturing PVG valves, which the factory ships out globally, along with spare parts, to OEM companies and other Danfoss locations.

At this site, Danfoss required a buffer storage solution to optimise its automated production line. A Kardex Shuttle (Vertical Lift Module) integrated with a robotic system, was installed to automate a particular labour-intensive process. 

The Kardex Shuttle with its robot integration, stores casting modules in baskets of 16 pcs each. Each tray can weigh up to 70 kilos. The machine features two access openings - on for the robot to replenish the extremely heavy parts and one for an operator to handle these same parts with a crane on the other side. Logicontrol 100 serves as the host system connecting the Kardex machine to Danfoss' ERP/logistics system.

Apart from the significant ergonomic benefits of this integration, it has also enabled Danfoss to reduce the amount of staff needed, whilst increasing the efficiency of their operations considerably. The machine can operate 24/7, with only one operator needed for the night shifts, which means significant labour cost savings for Danfoss per year. 

System Integration and Service Support

For Danfoss, with its complex manufacturing and distribution operations, seamless integration between multiple IT systems is crucial. Kardex has collaborated closely with Danfoss over the years, working alongside external PLC programmers to ensure smooth communication between all Kardex products and other systems across Danfoss sites.
